The National Gallery of Art (NGA)is a Federal Government Parastatal in the Federal Ministry of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, Federal Republic of Nigeria. It came into existence by an Enabling Act (Decree No. 86) of 1993, now amended by National Assembly Act of 2004. The NGA is the sole Agency charged with the responsibility of collecting the best of the best of painting; drawings and prints; sculpture; pottery and ceramics; photography; textiles; jewelry; architectural designs; communication designs and other works of art. The Corporate objective of the National Gallery of Art to run a viable and sustainable Art Gallery comparable in status and stature with those obtained in other part of the world, in the areas of collections, preservation, display, interpretation and appreciation of Nigerian works of art. The Art Galleries Association of Nigeria (AGAN) was founded by a group of notable Nigerian Artists and Art Collectors, with the support of the National Gallery of Art, Nigeria. It was formed for the purpose of protecting the individual, collective, private, corporate and national interest of everyone connected with teh business of arts, crafts, antiques, artifacts and allied products.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
i. To promote teh sale, purchase, transfer, supply, import and export of art, crafts, artifacts, antiques and other allied products in the art industry and allied services in Nigeria.
ii. To provide for all duly registered members, a healthy environment for the pursuit of business operations nationally and internationally.
iii. To create and sustain cordial relations, interactions and transactions among artists, collectors, dealers, buyers and all lovers of art.
iv. To organise and participate in exhibitions and events that would promote the commercialisation of art, allied products and services.
v. To identify and promote activities that would be beneficial to the Association in her relations with the three tiers of government in Nigeria, other associations, corporate bodies and individuals.
vi. To represent the views and focus of the Association before the appropriate authorities whenever the situation arises.
vii. To establish and maintain contact and co-operation with any person, government and non-governmental Orgaisations.
viii. To regularise and standardise the operations of all operators.
