The National Gallery of Art (NGA) in collaboration with the Art Galleries Association of Nigeria (AGAN) presents the 4th International Art Expo. The event in Modern Nigerian Art will open on December 3, and run till December 10, at the National Museum, Onikan, Lagos.
The NGA, an arm of the Federal Ministry if Tourism, Culture and National Orientation which oversees the visual arts sub-sector, instituted International ArtEpo Nigeria in 2008. This is conceived as the biggest visual art fair in the country which brings together galleries from within and outside the country to showcase remarkable works of art for sale at affordable rates. AGAN was established in 2005 to engender the highest professional and ethical standards of practical galleries and arts in Nigeria.
Last year’s event featured 29 galleries, two of which were from neighboring countries, Ghana and the Republic of Benin. Each gallery had the luxury of choosing their theme, and as such, presented a broad spectrum of ideas, concepts and meanings, well received by the public. Over 635 artworks showcase at the event included paintings, sculptural pieces, mixed media, photography, prints, textiles, drawings, bead works, leather works and graphics.
This year’s expo promises to be better organized and is aimed at encouraging galleries to present works that are visually engaging, thought provoking and centred around socially relevant issues. Leading galleries in Nigeria will present works in diverse media by established, as well as emergent artists as they chart the progress of modern and contemporary Nigeria and Africa Art. Talks will feature at the expo to acknowledge the richness, multiplicity of practical and critical reflections which centre on themes and trends in modern Nigeria art.
With the success and sustenance of the art expo, the National Gallery of Art and the Art Galleries Association of Nigeria continues to increase the visibility and appreciation of modern and contemporary Nigerian art.
